What Master Key System Design Actually Involves for Commercial Properties
A master key system is an engineered lock hierarchy, not simply a copy of a key that opens multiple doors. Every lock in the system is re-pinned or replaced so that individual keys (called 'change keys') open only one specific door, while a master key opens an entire designated group, and a grand master key opens every door in the facility. Sub-master keys sit between those levels — for example, a department supervisor might hold a sub-master that opens every door in the warehouse wing but cannot access executive offices or IT server rooms. This tiered structure is what distinguishes a designed system from an ad-hoc key collection.
The mortise lock is one of the most important hardware components in any serious commercial master key system. Unlike a standard cylindrical lock or door knob lock, a mortise lock body is installed within a pocket cut into the door's edge, giving it a vastly more robust mounting and a cylinder that is far easier to re-key within a master key hierarchy. Our technicians work with mortise lock hardware from trusted brands and can re-key existing mortise cylinders or supply and install new ones as part of a complete system build. If your Merrillville facility already has mortise hardware — common in older commercial buildings in the area — we can often integrate those locks into a new hierarchy without full replacement, keeping disruption and cost to a minimum.
